Be Careful the Way You Lean

A tree falls the way it leans. Be careful the way you lean.
— The Lorax

When cutting down a tree, a lumberjack famously yells "timber" when the tree begins to fall. It's a giant head's up, an alert, a familiar word of warning that something big is about to happen. Unless, of course, the tree starts falling in an unintended direction, in which case the lumberjack yells a few other choice words. (Cover your ears, Mom.)

For me, 2017 was the year of online drama. I was caught up in the 24-hour news cycle and social media more than listening to the inner-workings of my soul.  I'm so ready for 2018: the year of intention. My goal is to lean close and listen to my heart. To get clear on who I am and what I have to offer the world and take actionable steps to serve people well each day.

In 2018, I'm going to practice more silence. I'm going to take a regular Sabbath. I'm going to cultivate wholehearted living and work on casting a vision larger than myself.

In 2018, I am going to work every single day to help others silence the voice of their inner-critic and tap into what makes them want to live a better life. I am going to help people write a new story. I am going to use my skills as a life coach and my personal recovery story to empower others to stop being stuck in the pain of yesterday and begin to inhale this moment.

To put it simply, my goal is to:
Always be looking for good things.
Serve people well.
Love me.

What will you lean into this year?

It's time to stop listening to our fears and start leaning into our story. Fear tries to keep us from expanding our life. Fear wants to prevent us from casting the broader vision. Fear does it’s best to hold us back from inviting honest people into our inner-circle. Fear is a real son of a bitch, and the last thing it wants is for us to become intentional. But more than all of that, fear knows that to block us from healing, all it has to do is keep us overwhelmed.

On the days when your soul is gnawing inside of you, simmering, crying, asking to be poured out into your journal, or spoken aloud to your safe people, do it. Listen to the voice inside you, begging to be heard. The fears, pleading to be spoken. The dreams, longing to be validated.

It's your soul that longs to be courageous, to tell the truth, to speak the hard-won wisdom. It's your soul that refuses to buy into the bullshit from the status quo. It's your soul that is begging you to tell a better story.

We inherited the story of our parents. Some of us received the narrative of partisan politics, and others sat in the pews of oppressive religion. A culture of not-enoughness raised us, and we learned, either through direct instruction or the example of others, to fear anyone that isn't just like us. We watched as they backed down from fights that matter. We shuddered when they never found a hill to die on. We bought into the lie that being overwhelmed is just a way of life.

For the longest time, we have taken everyone else's story as our own, but it's time to delete that damn download and reformat. It's time to create a counter-narrative. We've got to sit down, get quiet, and start writing our personal story. One that isn't fearful of diversity and doesn't freeze when life gets hard. We need a better story: one that reminds us of our enoughness and empowers us to fight back. We need to affirm ourselves and shout into the eerie and unpredictable darkness, "I am here! And I'm not moving! I am ready to do the hard work, and you will not destroy me!"

Everyone loves a good hero story. We've all longed for a savior, even if we've never admitted it. But what if we became our own hero? We are the damn protagonist of our this story, and it's time we stood up, gritted our teeth, snarled our upper lip, fixed our eyes, and exhaled a big "hell no" to anyone and anything that doesn't see or value us for the real badass we are.

The journey from chaos to calm begins when you begin to lean into your story and away from all the fear, shame, and guilt that has held you back. Once you start doing that, no one can take it away from you. No amount of gossip or slander or disengagement can take away from the fact that you are not who you once were, but in the process of coming through difficulty and pressing on in the face of adversity, you have been changed.

And you will change the world as a result.
